October 8, 2005 - Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show
Vince Vaughn really broke into the movie scene when he played Jamie O'Hara in Rudy. That was by no means his first exposure to Notre Dame. Growing up in the suburbs north of Chicago, Vaughn had been a life long Notre Dame fan. Starting with Rudy, Vaughn would begin inserting into his movies his love of Notre Dame. Some of these examples include:
- Wedding Crashers: Rule #76: No excuses. Play like a champion.
- The Break Up: Wearing Notre Dame shirt and cup
- Dodgeball: Luck of the Irish sign
- Mr. and Mrs. Smith: Brad Pitt's character graduated from Notre Dame with an art history degree
(Though the best thing to come out of Rudy is Vince Vaughn met Jon Favreau and the two wrote Swingers together.)
As a Notre Dame fan, it should be no surprise that Vince Vaughn chose to bring his Wild West Comedy Show to campus. In 2005, Vaughn was touring through thirty cities filming a DVD of all the shows. He wanted to bring comedy out of Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago and into the heart of America. The idea came out of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show where Buffalo Bill would bring the stars of the West to the smaller cities in the eastern and central United States. Vaughn brought other comics and movie stars along with him. The show premiered in Stepan Center and Vaughn was glad to be back on campus.
