December 8, 2001 - George O'Leary hired as head football coach
Following the departure of head coach Bob Davie, athletic director Kevin White and President Monk Malloy began the search for a new coach. Their search resulted in highly regarded George O'Leary. O'Leary had been the head coach at Georgia Tech since 1994 and was the Bobby Dodd National Coach of the Tear in 2000. He also received the ACC Coach of the Year award in 1998 and 2000. In seven years, O'Leary's record was 52-33 (0.612) at Georgia Tech highlighted by a 10-2 record in 1998. That same year the Yellow Jackets were co-ACC Champions and Gator Bowl victors.
George O'Leary certainly had quite the resume coming into his biggest coach job yet at Notre Dame...
