January 10, 2009 - Men's basketball wins 45 in a row

With a 88-79 victory over Seton Hall, Notre Dame won its 45th straight game at home setting a new school record. Luke Harangody scored 30 points and 16 rebounds, his 12th double-double of the season and second career 30pt/15+rebound game. The victory also tied home Big East win streak record set by Pittsburgh with 20 games in a row.

The last loss at home occurred on February 25, 2006 when Marquette won in the Joyce Center 80-72. The following game on March 4, 2006 Notre Dame beat DePaul 66-61 and the streak started. During the span of 45 games (or 1,044 days), Notre Dame put together the following notable victories:

  • Two undefeated seasons at home (2006-2007, 2007-2008)
  • Six victories over ranked teams including
    • #5 Alabama
    • #10 Georgetown
    • #15 Maryland
    • #16 Marquette (twice)
    • #21 West Virginia
  • Twenty victories against Big East teams
  • Victory over every Big East opponent except Rutgers (who was never scheduled at home during the span)
  • Three victories over DePaul
  • Two victories over West Virginia, Seton Hall, Marquette, and Providence

The next game at home on January 24, 2009 against #3 Connecticut would see the streak ended. (Of course after not losing at home in three years, this is the game I fly back for. Blame the streak ending on me. I was there for the Marquette loss the following Monday as well.)

As of January 10, 2012, Notre Dame is on its way through another streak. Dating back to February 24, 2010 Notre Dame has won 28 home games in a row and 12 Big East home games in a row. The team also put together its third undefeated season at home in five years by going perfect through the 2010-2011 season. There are eight Big East home games remaining this season, but the schedule includes #16 Connecticut, #1 Syracuse, and #24 Marquette. Win those three and we'll be at 20 games again, another perfect season at home, and waiting for next year. Go Irish!

Glove and I drove out to the two games in '09 as well, so we share some of the blame.
