January 27, 1990 - Basketball gets revenge on Miami

The Notre Dame basketball team got revenge against Miami for what happened on the football field during the Fall. The Miami football team ended Lou Holtz's 23 game winning streak and defeated the #1 Irish 27-10. Notre Dame would finish the season ranked second behind national champion Miami. On the court, Digger Phelp's basketball squad came into the game superior to the young Miami basketballers.

Right out of the gate Notre Dame took charge of the game and led by three touchdowns twelve minutes into the game, 34-12. The Irish were shooting 79% compared to Miami's 20% and led 53-39 at halftime. Digger Phelps played eleven different players during the first half. The second half was more of the same as Monty Williams and LaPhonso Ellis continued to pour it on. With 6:29 remaining, walk-on Tim Crawford was put into the game to a loud ovation. He again brought the crowd to their feet as his 12-foot shot doubled Miami's points and put Notre Dame over the century mark, 101-50 with 2:20 left. The final score would be 107-60 and while it didn't make up for the football loss, beating Miami always felt good. From the players to the crowd, it was clear that the rivalry permeated the football teams and existed wholly between the two schools.

It's worth noting that Miami's coach Bill Foster had completely restarted the basketball program. Following the 1970-71 season, Miami disbanded its basketball program and restarted it in 1984. At the conclusion of the 1990 season, Miami would join the Big East and by the end of the decade had returned to national prominence once again.
