February 13, 1867 - President Burns born
Rev. James A. Burns, C.S.C. would go on to become Notre Dame's 9th President from 1919-1922. Father Burns would become the first president to hold an advanced degree and was committed to making Notre Dame a place of higher education. He eliminated the preparatory school and improved the Law School. Burns was also responsible for setting up the first endowment, which has now grown to the 14th largest educational endowment in the country and largest at a Catholic university. As a proponent of research, Fr. Burns was responsible for bringing in many faculty members including Father Julius Nieuwland, creator of the first synthetic rubber neoprene.
