March 21, 2004 - Hockey receive first NCAA invitation

After competing on and off for the last 100 years and always coming up short, the Notre Dame Hockey team received their first NCAA Tournament invite. The #13 Irish had a 20-14-4 record and were seeded fourth in the Midwest Region. They would face the two-time defending champs Minnesota in the first round. The other matchup in their region was second seed Minnesota-Duluth verse third seed Michigan State.

Notre Dame was coached by Dave Poulin and Minnesota coached by Don Lucia. The two were teammates at Notre Dame from 1978-1981.
