May 21, 1923 - Ara Parseghian's Birthday
Today Coach Ara Raoul Parseghian turns 89. Born in Akron, Ohio, Ara grew up playing football. After serving in the Navy in World War II, he played for Miami (OH) and would play for the Cleveland Browns. An injury cut his playing career short so he returned to Miami (OH) as coach under Woody Hayes. Ara became the head coach at Northwestern and posted a 4-0 record against Notre Dame.
In 1964, Ara Parseghian became head coach of Notre Dame; the first coach to not be a graduate. As head coach, Notre Dame would win two national championships in 1966 and 1973. In his first year, stand out quarterback John Huarte won the Heisman Trophy as the team finished with a 9-1-0 record (or 9.75-0.25 record as Ara would joke). Today, Ara has the distinction of being the oldest living coach to have won a national championship.
