1951 ND 'B' 35 Indiana State Penitentiary team 0 @ Michigan City State Prison, Ind
The Irish 'B' team played against a team made up of inmates at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City. Before entering the prison yard where the game was played, the Irish players had to have their equipment thoroughly checked by the prison guards. ND was led by a left handed soph QB-Bobby Martin from Iowa. The Prison team was led 'by a silver haired quarterback'.
From the book 'the Forgotten Four':
'The Irish coasted early to a 35-0 lead against a group of slow and mean prisoners.....The most noteworthy item about the contest is the beating some of the inmates tried to dole out against the young Fighting Irish, with a number of broken noses resulting."
Finally a disputed call went against the prison team. The inmates nearly rioted. Again from the book 'the Forgotten Four':
"The referee summonsed the Irish coaches and players and advised them not to score any more points during the game so as not to stir the restive opponents and their associates, a piece of advise immediately taken as Gospel."
