November 18, 1966 - The Michigan State Undercard
1966 vs Michigan State frosh (A) WON 30-27
This game was played in Spartan Stadium the night before the famous 10-10 tie by the two respective varsity teams.
With Ara watching for the press box, the Irish frosh raced to a 21-0 lead on 2 td passes from QB Tom Gores to SE Nick Furlong and an 88 yd kickoff return td by Larry Schumacher. Gores was a late substitute starter at QB because the regular Irish QB Don Reid had been hurt earlier in the week while running the prep team against the Irish varsity.
Mich. St roared back in the 2nd half to take a 27-21 lead late in the game. ND scored on its next possession on a short td run by Ed Ziegler with 2:38 left. But then Ziegler missed the XP, leaving the score tied 27-27.
However this game would not end in a tie like the famous varsity game the next afternoon. The Irish defense (led by Bobby Olson and Mike McCoy) forced a quick '3 and out' after 3 straight incomplete passes (stopping the clock with each incompletion). That left the Irish just enough time to move into scoring position. With 1:15 remaining, Zeigler redeemed his earlier missed XP with a 32 yard FG.
And that's the way it ended: ND 30 MSU 27
Steve Garvey, later of baseball fame (Dodgers and Padres) played DB for the MSU frosh, as did Bubba Smith's younger brother-Tody (who later transferred to USC and played on the famed 'Wild Bunch' defense against ND).
