November 23, 1968 - Freshman Beat Tennessee on the Ground

By Olson

1968 vs Tennessee Frosh (H) WON 15-7

This was the first in a series of freshmen games against Tennessee, but not the first time that football teams from the two schools had met. The first meeting between the schools was the 'infamous' 1951 'B' game (JV teams) in Knoxville. The Vols won that 'B' game 38-7, but many of the Irish B team players' insist to this day' that they were playing against many of the Tenn. varsity starters in that game (Source: 'The Forgotten Four')

Apparently the Vols left the varsity at home for this frosh match, as the Irish won 15-7 behind two rushing tds by HB Tom Gatewood (yes he played HB on the Freshmen team before converting to SE on the varsity).

Irish QB Jim Yoder spent the day handing the ball off to his RBs. In addition to Gatewood's two td runs, Irish frosh FB John Cieszkowski gained 144 yds on 29 carries while HB Andy Huff added 89 yards on 19 carries vs the Vol frosh.
