October 31, 1970 - Late Game Heroics
1970 vs Tennessee Frosh (H) WON 21-20
This was the third meeting in as many years between the Irish frosh and the Tenn. Frosh. The Irish freshmen had looked like they had been sleepwalking through the first 3 quarters of this game and trailed the Vols 20-0 at the beginning of the 4th Q.
But then the Irish woke up. ND frosh HB Mark Dunn (from Mater Dei in LA) scored the first Irish td on a 3 yard run at 14:04 (Cliff Brown kicked the XP) Tenn 20 ND 7. Later, QB Brown led the Irish down the field again. TE Dave Casper had a 22 yard catch on this series for the big gainer. The drive ended in another score with HB Gary Dininick rushing for a 6 yard td (Brown again kicked the XP) Tenn 20 ND 14
Then the Irish defense led by big DTs Tom Ross and Dennis Lozzi stopped the Vols, giving the ND one last chance. The Irish finished off their rally when Brown hit Dunn with a 17 yd td pass with 2:07 left to play. Brown proceeded to kick the game winning XP in an ND Frosh 21-20 come from way behind 4th Q rally.
