August 31, 2002 - The Ty Willlingham Era Begins
As the 2002 season gets underway, first year head coach Tyrone Willingham leads Notre Dame against #21 Maryland in the Kickoff Classic at Giants Stadium. Maryland was coming off of a ten win season the previous year.
Senior Shane Walton ties the school record with three interceptions and contributes to the defense holding Maryland to 133 total yards. Special teams do their part as well with a 76 yard punt return for a touchdown by Vontez Duff. Nicholas Setta also ties a school record by making five field goals, the longest coming from 51 yards.
Notre Dame would shut out Maryland 22-0, giving Willingham and Notre Dame the first shut out by a new coach since Terry Brennan in 1954 (a 21-0 win over Texas).
1 2 3 4 F N. Dame 3 6 10 3 22 #21 Maryland 0 0 0 0 0
Perhaps the writing was on the wall since the special teams carried the day. The offense set up the field goals but was unable to notch any touchdowns.
