September 7, 2002 - Winning Without An Offense
Willingham's Irish, now ranked #24 with a 1-0 record, gained another victory depsite the offense not scoring a touchdown. While the special teams unit was the star the prior week, defense took all the credit. In the second quarter, Gerome Sapp and Lionel Bolen scored on fumble returns 11 seconds apart. As the game entered the fourth quarter however, Purdue tied the game despite falling behind 17-0.
Vontez Duff would add an interception thrown by Kyle Orton and return it for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. That would prove the difference maker and for the second week in a row, Notre Dame would win without scoring an offensive touchdown.
