February 23, 1970 - The night that Sid Catlett missed the bus

By Olson

ND traveled by bus to play Butler in old Hinkle Fieldhouse

The Irish only brought 7 players. Center John Pleick had been declared academically ineligible at the end of the first semester, while teammates Mike O'Connell and Doug Gemmell were injured and didn't make the trip. Sid Catlett..., well Sid missed the bus.

The game was the last home game for Butler Head Coach Tony Hinkle. Hinkle had coached the Bulldogs since 1926. The old arena had recently been renamed in his honor.

According to a very fine article written about this game by Tim Neely in Blue & Gold Illustrated back in 1986, there were 17,000 in attendance but the 'Butler officials stopped counting around 14,000 when fire codes were exceeded but continued to let spectators in the old building.'

Two Irish players (football defensive end, 6'7 Jay Ziznewski and Jim Hinga 6'4 forward) fouled out of the game. That left the Irish with only the 5 players on the floor-two of which ended with 4 fouls themselves-Tom Sinnott and Collis Jones.

With the score ND 108 Butler 106 late in the game, the Irish reeled off 13 straight points, to be followed by Butler scoring the final 8 for a 121-114 Irish victory.

For the game, Austin Carr took 44 shots-making 22 & was 6 of 7 at the free throw line for 50 points. Carr also had 12 rebounds.

Collis Jones made 18 of 31 shots and 4 of 5 free throws for 40 points and 18 rebounds.

Carr and Jones combined for 90 of ND's 121 points.

          Notre Dame 121 points

Austin Carr 50 pts 12 rbs
Collis Jones 40 pts 18 rbs
          Jackie Meehan 16 pts
Tom Sinnott 8 pts 8 rbs
Jim Hinga O pts 6 rbs
Jay Ziznewski 7 pts 8 rbs
          John Gallagher O pts

ND was 53 for 106 in FGs (50%)

As Neely pointed out at the end of his article, the very first game ever played in that old Fieldhouse had also been between Notre Dame and Butler in 1928 (Hinkle coached that game too). FINAL Butler 21 ND 13.

PS Neely also mentioned in his article that Sid Catlett 'unsuccessfully' tried to drive to the game after missing the bus.
