March 14, 1970 - Many Records Set in the Loss

Prior to 1975, there was a "participation ribbon" in the NCAA tournament dictated by the Regional Third Place Game. After losing to #1 Kentucky 109-99 in the prior game, Notre Dame now faced Iowa in the Mideast Regional Third Place Game.

       1 2 F
ND 42 64 106
Iowa 75 46 121

The game would be a high scoring affair with Iowa emerging victorious on the higher end of the 121-106 game. Between Notre Dame and Iowa, nine NCAA Tournament records would be set:

  • Most Field Goals Made by an Individual in a Game - 21 made by Austin Carr (this is currently tied for fifth all-time)
