After receiving a bye into the second round of the NCAA Tournament, #8 Notre Dame (22-4) faced Tennessee Tech. Notre Dame would win the game convincingly 94-61. Two NCAA Tournament records would be set by Notre Dame in this game:

Tennesse Tech made 23 of 84 field goals while Notre Dame made 35 of 95 field goals. The frequent misses allowed Notre Dame to pull down 86 rebounds. John McCarthy led the way with 21 rebounds, followed by Tom Hawkins 14, Michael Graney 11, Thomas Reinhart and Robert Devine 9, James Williams 8, Eugene Duffy 6, Michael Ireland 3, and Robert Bradtke and Edward Gleason with one apiece.
