With a #1 ranking and a 1-0 record after beating Cal 41-8, the defending national champions traveled down to West Lafayette to face #10 Purdue.

Purdue upset Notre Dame 28-21 that day. During the loss, QB Terry Hanratty set the single game passing attempt record that still stands today. Hanratty passed the ball 63 times. The next day the Indianapolis star printed the following quote:

"Any college football team that throws 63 passes certainly is operating on the ragged edge of panic."

Hanratty was 29 of 63 with 4 interceptions. He was also the leading rusher. Hanratty would throw 15 INTs in the first 5 games (3-2 record) of the 1967 season and none the remainder of the year (Irish finished 8-2).

Most Pass Attempts in a Single Game:

  1. 63 - 09/30/1967 @ #10 Purdue - Terry Hanratty (L 21-28)
  2. 60 - 09/17/2005 vs Michigan State - Brady Quinn (L 41-44 OT)
