October 12, 1974 - Rice puts up a fight
Defending National Champions Notre Dame came into the Rice game with a 3-1 record and ranked #6. Rice would finish the season with a 2-8-1 record, but gave Notre Dame trouble the entire afternoon. The referees also added a number of penalties (10 to each team, 160 total yards) to make for a difficult game for the Irish.
Rice scored a 36-yard field goal on their second possession to take an early 3-0 lead. The Irish then went in search of their offense. Penalties and turnovers killed a number of scoring opportunities. In the second quarter, Notre Dame had a first down at the Rice 23-yard line. The referees blew the whistle for an illegal procedure and 5-yard penalty. Ara did not agree with this call and ran down to the 30-yard line inquiring about the penalty. The official then threw a flag on Ara for being beyond the 35-yard zone, another 15-yard penalty. This second flag made Coach a bit more irate and his language earned a second flag and an additional fifteen yards. After the 35-yard penalty, the Irish lined up for 1st-and-45 back at their own 42.
The offense got things together for a drive with Clements coming out throwing. Demmerle for a 13-yard gain, Samuel for 11, Weiler for 4, Weiler for 4, and Weiler for 4. Dave Reeve had missed an earlier attempt from 31-yards but connected from 45-yards to tie the game at 3. With the score 3-3 at half, this would mark Notre Dame's lowest first half scoring of the season.
The Irish defense did their job the second half. Rice's longest drive went 19 yards. In the fourth quarter and still tied, Notre Dame started at their own 20 driving into the wind. Twenty plays later, fullback Wayne Bullock ran two yards for the game winning touchdown and 3:08 remaining in the game. The Irish would hold on to win despite their lowest offensive output of the season.
