December 11, 1973 - Digger gets revenge against Bob Knight

By Olson

#6 Notre Dame faced #3 Indiana in Bloomington. This was just two years after Indiana had destroyed Notre Dame in the same building by a score of 94-29 (Knight's payback for the previous year's Fordham-Army game).

Notre Dame played without injured guard Gary Brokaw. Freshmen Ray Martin and Billy Paterno combined to replace Brokaw in the lineup. In front of over 17,000, the Irish won 73-67 to remain unbeaten.

John Shumate led ND in scoring with 25 pts. Billy Paterno added 16 and fellow frosh Adrian Dantley chipped in with 15.

.....Digger was said to leave the floor after the game with tears in his eyes.
