February 22, 1981 - Woolridge takes down the Cavaliers
Entering the 1980-81 season, Virginia was continuing off of their previous seson's NIT Championship. Now ranked #1 with a 23-0 record, #11 Notre Dame (19-4) met Virginia at the Rosemont Horizon Center in Rosemont, Illinois. Notre Dame students traveled to the game by the bus load as Notre Dame was gaining the reputation of taking down #1 ranked teams.
- In 1977, Notre Dame defeated #1 San Francisco (29-0).
- In 1978, Notre Dame defeated #1 Marquette.
- In 1980, Notre Dame defeated #1 DePaul.
- And of course, in 1974 Notre Dame ended #1 UCLA's 88 game win streak.
As seen in the video below, Notre Dame trailed 56-55 with seconds to go. After the inbounds pass and a missed shot, Orlando Woolridge caught the rebound, dribbled, and sunk the game winning shot over the tower Ralph Sampson. As pandemonium spilled out onto the floor, Notre Dame once again took down #1.
With the victory, Notre Dame ended Virginia's 28 game winning streak. And it would not be the last time Notre Dame defeatd the #1 ranked team.
