June 10, 1940 - Fr. Hesburgh returns to the US
Fr. Hesburgh had began his studies at the University of Notre Dame in 1934. In 1937, he transferred to Gregorian University in Rome where he received his bachelor's degree in philosophy. With the War in Europe continuing to spread by 1940 and turmoil in Italy, Father Hesburgh returned to the United States and enrolled at Holy Cross College in Washington D.C. to continue his theological studies. He would ultimately earn his Doctorate of Theology from Catholic University, also in Washington D.C.
