June 27, 1952 - Fr. Hesburgh is appointed 15th President of Notre Dame
Following the presidency of John J. Cavanaugh, Fr. Hesburgh would become the 15th President of the University of Notre Dame. Fr. Hesburgh would serve for 35 years, longer than any other president prior or since. Fr. Sorin assumed the presidency for the first twenty-three years of the school's beginning, but 1922 each president had served a term of six years.
